Bolivia's fractional silver coinage of the early 1850s was minted at Potosí, the high-altitude mint that had been striking silver continuously since the colonial period. By 1852, the newly independent republic was still navigating severe monetary instability, with debased "feble" (weak) silver coinage — struck at reduced fineness to address chronic silver shortages — flooding domestic circulation and driving out better-quality pieces. This quarter sol belongs to that debased feble series, a deliberate policy that drew fierce criticism from neighboring states whose merchants refused the coins at face value.
