Additional information

The Gepids seized Sirmium from the Ostrogoths following Theoderic's death in 526, and this fraction almost certainly post-dates that transfer despite retaining his name — a politically convenient fiction that lent Roman legitimacy to a barbarian administration. Invoking a dead Ostrogothic king alongside a reigning Eastern emperor was not contradiction but calculation. The absence of the officina mark distinguishes this from related Sirmium issues and has not been fully explained by the scholarship.
