Sirmium — modern Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia — was one of the most strategically contested cities in late antiquity, and the Gepids held it only by Theoderic's sufferance after the Ostrogothic settlement of Italy in 493. These fractional silver pieces were struck in Theoderic's name but under Gepid administration, a peculiar arrangement that reflects the layered tributary relationships of post-Roman barbarian politics. The angled bust variant is distinguished from related issues by die work suggesting a separate hand at the Sirmium mint, and Metlich's treatment remains the most granular published analysis of the series.
