Obverse description Bare-headed, draped bust of Queen Victoria facing left, rendered in the young head portrait engraved by William Wyon after the model by Sir Francis Chantrey. The hair is elaborately styled in flowing waves drawn back and gathered into a chignon of ringlets at the nape. The legend VICTORIA QUEEN arcs around the field, divided by the effigy, with VICTORIA to the left and QUEEN to the right. The truncation of the bust is plain. The coin is enclosed by a fine toothed border.

Within the wreath, the denomination is displayed in three lines: the fraction 1/4 at the top, RUPEE below it, and the Urdu legend چار آنہ (meaning 'Four Annas') beneath in Nastaliq script. The date 1840 appears in the exergue below the wreath. The arc legend EAST INDIA COMPANY runs around the upper periphery outside the wreath.
