The "mule tiger" designation refers to a pattern piece combining mismatched dies — in this case, pairing elements not intended for simultaneous use in approved coinage. India's transition year of 1947 produced a number of experimental and pattern strikes as the new government worked to establish a post-independence coinage identity, and several tiger-motif designs were explored before being abandoned entirely in favor of the Sarnath lion capital. SW#9.101 is known from only a handful of confirmed specimens.
