Additional information

Mauritius quarter rupees of this period were struck at the Royal Mint in London, as the island's colonial administration had no local minting capacity. The 1934–1936 window coincides with a sustained depression in the global sugar market, which devastated the Mauritian economy and sharply reduced government revenues — yet silver coinage continued to be issued, partly to maintain confidence in the colonial monetary system during a period of serious labor unrest on the island's plantations.
