Indore's coinage during this period was issued under the Holkar dynasty, a Maratha ruling family whose monetary output reflected the fragmented nature of currency across central India — dozens of princely states each maintaining their own issues, often with overlapping types that circulated interchangeably in local markets. The Holkars had fought both with and against the British across three Anglo-Maratha wars, and the survival of their mint rights into the late nineteenth century was a negotiated concession of the post-1818 subsidiary alliance with the East India Company.
The 79-year span assigned to KM#72 suggests a long-lived, minimally altered type — common in Holkar coinage, where die-cutting traditions changed slowly and regal years were often omitted or rendered symbolically.
