Obverse description Crowned figure of Philip II stands facing within a sailing vessel, holding an upraised sword in his right hand and a heraldic shield in his left, the ship rendered with rigging and decorative hull in the late medieval style. The hull of the vessel is depicted with stylized waves below, and the mast and rigging frame the sovereign on either side. A beaded inner circle separates the central design from the surrounding Latin legend. The peripheral legend reads PHS D G HISP REX DNS TRA, identifying Philip by the grace of God as King of Spain and Lord of Utrecht.
