Obverse description Central field displays a large crowned shield of Flanders bearing the rampant lion, flanked on either side by smaller square shields with floral motifs. Two crossed banners or staffs rise behind the central shield, their drapery spreading outward in an ornate heraldic composition. The entire device is set within a beaded inner circle, above which a decorative crown surmounts the main shield. The surrounding legend in Latin reads MO : AVREA · METROPOL · GAND · FLAND ·, identifying this as the gold coinage of the metropolis of Ghent in Flanders. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of hammered gold coinage of this period.
