Obverse description A crowned armored ruler stands within a sailing vessel, depicted in the medieval regal tradition, holding an upright sword in the right hand and a shield bearing the arms of Overijssel in the left. The ship's hull, rigging, and railings are rendered in fine hammered detail characteristic of the rose noble type. A continuous Latin legend surrounds the design within a beaded border.

Reverse description A floriated cross with fleur-de-lis terminals occupies the full field, with a quatrefoil containing a central rosette at the cross's intersection. A crowned lion passant guardant is placed in each of the four angles formed by the cross arms. The design closely follows the traditional English rose noble reverse composition, adapted for the Province of Overijssel. The date 85 (for 1585) appears within the surrounding Latin legend, enclosed by a beaded border.
