Honduras adopted aluminum for this trial piece in 1872 while the metal was still considered a prestige material — the Washington Monument's apex cap, famously cast in aluminum, wouldn't be placed until 1884. The Tegucigalpa mint was evaluating lightweight coinage options during a period of chronic small-denomination shortages, when fractional copper coins routinely failed to circulate at face value. Nothing came of it; aluminum coinage in Honduras would not materialize for decades.
