San Luis Potosí issued copper fractional coinage in 1862 under the authority of the state government during a period when the federal Mexican treasury had effectively collapsed under the strain of the Reform War's aftermath and Juárez's suspension of debt payments — the very act that triggered French intervention. With silver coinage largely hoarded or absent from daily commerce, individual Mexican states stepped in to produce low-denomination copper pieces to keep local markets functioning. This quartilla is a direct artifact of that fiscal disintegration.
