In 1861, Sinaloa was operating with considerable autonomy from the central Mexican government, and local pattern issues like this one reflect the chronic coin shortages that plagued northwestern Mexico throughout the Reform War period. Whether this piece was ever seriously considered for production is unclear — no regular copper fractional coinage was ultimately struck for Sinaloa, making this pattern an endpoint rather than a prototype.
