Obverse description Central shield bearing a turreted castle with three towers, the whole enclosed within a plain shield outline. A partial circular legend in Latin surrounds the shield, reading PHILIPPVS D.G. ISPANI P R, attributed to Philip II of Spain. The coin exhibits the irregular flan and bold relief characteristic of hammered coinage produced at the Lima mint in the sixteenth century.
