| Additional information |
The Potosí mint, operating at over 4,000 meters elevation in what is now Bolivia, was for two centuries the single largest source of silver in the Atlantic economy. The "no lettering" variety of this fractional issue omits the peripheral legend present on related types — a known production characteristic rather than an error, likely a consequence of working with dies cut for undersized planchets at this denomination.
Charles IV had ascended the Spanish throne just five years before this piece was struck, his reign already shadowed by the French Revolution and the execution of his Bourbon cousin Louis XVI in 1793.
