The quarto de real occupied an awkward position in colonial commerce — too small for significant transactions, yet essential for making change in a cash-scarce economy where cacao beans and other commodities still supplemented metal currency well into the late colonial period. Lima's output of this denomination was prodigious, and the mint operated continuously through the period of Carlos IV's reign despite the disruptions of the Napoleonic Wars severing reliable communication with Madrid after 1808.
That 1808 cutoff is not arbitrary: the French invasion and the forced abdications at Bayonne effectively ended Carlos IV's reign mid-year, leaving Lima minters in administrative limbo before Ferdinand VII coinage authorization arrived.
