The Kingdom of Hejaz existed for barely a decade as an independent state — Husayn ibn Ali declared himself King in 1916 following the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule, a uprising coordinated in part with British backing through the Cairo office. These bronzes were among the first coins struck for the new kingdom, produced at a moment when Husayn controlled the holy cities of Mecca and Medina but almost nothing else. Saudi forces under Ibn Saud drove him from the throne in 1924, making the entire Hejazi coinage series exceptionally short-lived.
