Struck at the Mecca mint in the immediate aftermath of Ibn Saud's conquest of the Hijaz, this issue dates to the transitional period before the unified Saudi state was formally proclaimed. The Hejaz and Nejd combination on the issuing authority reflects a deliberate political hedge — Ibn Saud had taken Mecca in October 1924 but had not yet consolidated the administrative apparatus to replace the Hashemite coinage wholesale. Small copper fractions like this one circulated heavily among pilgrims and local traders in the Haram district, and survivors in any decent condition are considerably scarcer than mintage assumptions would suggest.
