Peru's 1823 coinage represents the first attempts at a national monetary identity following independence declared in 1821, and pattern issues from this period document the experimental decisions made before a standard coinage was settled. This copper quarter peso pattern corresponds to KM#Pn1, one of several trial pieces struck as the new republic's authorities worked through denominational and compositional options.
