Costa Rica's early republican coinage was struck at the Casa de Moneda in San José, which opened in 1825 and remained one of the few functioning mints in Central America after the collapse of the Federal Republic. By the 1850s the mint was working with locally sourced silver from Guanacaste, though supply was inconsistent enough that production runs were irregular across the issue's five-year span. KM#103 is known with multiple date varieties, and the 1853 emission in particular shows considerable variation in die alignment.
