| Additional information |
South Africa's farthing series launched in 1923, the first year the newly established Pretoria Mint struck coins on its own authority rather than relying on the Royal Mint in London. The transition was politically significant — Pretoria had only received its mint warrant in 1919, and these early bronze issues were among the first demonstrations of the Union's independent striking capability.
The 1924 issue carries a notably lower mintage than the 1923, and examples from both years in uncirculated condition are considerably harder to find than catalog populations suggest.
