Additional information

Anonymous bracteate issues of this type circulated during the reign of Inge I Haraldsson (Inge the Hunchback), a period of near-constant dynastic conflict as Norwegian royal claimants fought a succession of civil wars that would last, with little interruption, for over a century. At 0.06 g, these were among the smallest silver coins produced anywhere in medieval Europe — a quarter penning represented a denomination so fractional that its practical daily use remains debated among Scandinavian numismatists.
