Skaare 184 falls within the long bracket attributed to the reigns of Håkon Håkonsson and his son Magnus Lagabøte, a period during which Norway's monetary system was fragmentary at best, with bracteate-influenced thin silver pieces circulating alongside heavier types.
The quarter penning denomination is among the smallest fractional issues in medieval Scandinavian numismatics, struck for small transactions at a time when silver by weight still competed with coined money.
