Additional information

Struck under the Sverre dynasty during one of Norway's most fractious periods, when competing royal claimants and the Birkebeiner–Bagler civil conflict destabilized nearly every institution of the kingdom. Coinage from this era was produced at rudimentary facilities with minimal dies standardization, and Skaare's attribution of this type spans a 35-year window precisely because die evidence cannot pin it closer.

The quarter penning denomination is exceptionally rare in any condition — surviving examples tend to show irregular flans typical of hand-cut blanks.
