Albert and Isabella governed the Spanish Netherlands as co-sovereigns following their marriage in 1599, a political arrangement designed by Philip II to give the provinces a nominally autonomous ruling pair while keeping them firmly within the Spanish orbit. The Patagon series was introduced under their rule partly to stabilize trade coinage amid chronic shortages of reliable silver currency in the commercial centers of Antwerp and Brussels — cities still recovering from the economic devastation of the Dutch Revolt.
The quarter Patagon was the workhorse fraction, circulating heavily into German and northern French markets. Brabant's mint output during this window was substantial, and die wear on surviving examples is common.
