René of Anjou's brief tenure as Count of Barcelona (1466–1472) was less a reign than a prolonged negotiation — the Catalan civil war had exhausted the principality, and René was effectively a French figurehead inserted by the Catalans after deposing John II of Aragon. This fractional gold issue belongs to that interregnum, struck in the name of a claimant who never fully controlled the territory whose coins bore his title.
