The Longboat Noble series was produced by Pobjoy Mint for the Isle of Man, one of the few jurisdictions in the 1980s actively minting platinum bullion coins for the collector and investor market. Platinum coinage was a genuine rarity at the time — the Soviet Palladium and Platinum issues aside, almost no Western mint was producing .9995 fine platinum in coin form before the Maple Leaf program launched in 1988.
KM#168 covers both the 1986 and 1987 dates, which differ in minor die details consistent with Pobjoy's annual production changes for the series.
