| Obverse description | At centre, a quartered royal shield of arms set within an octofoil (octilobe) border, with a fleur-de-lis positioned at each angle of the surrounding framework and a crescent mark above the shield. The shield displays the arms of France ancient quartered with those of England, indicative of Edward III's claim to the French throne. The entire design is rendered in the bold, decorative Gothic style characteristic of English hammered gold coinage of the Treaty period. The peripheral legend in Gothic Latin lettering reads: + EDWARD x DEI x GRA x REX x AnGL. |
