Obverse description At centre, the quartered royal arms of England and France displayed on a shield surmounted by a crown, the whole enclosed within a cusped tressure with trefoils at each cusp point. The shield bears the fleurs-de-lis of France in the first and fourth quarters and the passant guardant lions of England in the second and third quarters. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding uncial Latin legend, which reads continuously around the periphery.
