Obverse lettering EDWAR R ANGL Z FRANC D HYB
(Translation: Edward King of England and France Lord of Ireland)
Reverse description A floriated royal cross with arms terminating in trefoils divides the field into four quadrants, each occupied by a passant guardant lion; at the centre of the cross stands a miniature noble ship. The entire composition is enclosed within a cusped tressure with trefoils on the cusps, echoing the obverse design. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the continuous uncial Latin legend surrounding the periphery. The overall treatment is characteristic of the refined hammered goldsmith work of Edward III's Pre-treaty coinage.
