| Reverse description | The reverse field presents a three-line Shi'a Islamic profession of faith arranged in horizontal registers within a plain linear border. The upper register bears the shahada 'La ilaha illa Allah' (There is no god but God), the central register continues with 'Muhammad rasul Allah' (Muhammad is the Messenger of God), and the lower register carries the distinctively Shi'a addition 'Ali wali Allah' (Ali is the friend of God). The bold, raised Nasta'liq lettering fills the flan with a characteristic density common to hammered Iranian gold coinage of the eighteenth century. The irregular flan edges reflect the hand-struck nature of this issue. |
