Reverse description The reverse field is entirely occupied by a dense arrangement of Devanagari script in multiple lines, presenting the royal legend and auspicious inscriptions of King Surendra Vikrama Shah. A central vertical axis of Devanagari characters is flanked by additional inscription blocks to the left and right, rendered in bold, raised relief. The composition fills the flan to its limits, with no central pictorial motif. A beaded border encloses the entire design, consistent with the hammered coinage tradition of the Shah dynasty.

Additional information

The quarter mohar occupied a specific functional niche in Nepal's gold coinage hierarchy during the Shah dynasty period, small enough for everyday elite transactions but still struck in fine gold at a time when Kathmandu's mint operated under direct palace supervision. Surendra Vikrama's reign was marked by the effective transfer of real power to the Rana prime ministers following Jung Bahadur Rana's coup of 1846 — meaning this coin was issued under a king who held the throne in name while governing authority sat elsewhere.
