Girvan Yuddha Bikram Shah ruled during one of the most turbulent periods in Nepalese history, his reign coinciding almost precisely with the escalating tensions that would culminate in the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814–16. The East India Company had been watching Nepal's westward expansion along the Himalayan foothills for years before conflict finally broke out, months after this coinage type ceased production.
Nepalese silver mohars of this period were struck by hand using local hammered techniques, producing coins of notoriously irregular shape — a feature of the series, not a defect.
