Obverse description Struck in hammered gold, the obverse bears a multi-line Arabic religious legend disposed across the irregular flan in bold nasta'liq script. The field contains the Shi'a kalima comprising the shahada and the declaration of Ali as the Friend of God: 'La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad rasul Allah, Ali wali Allah.' The inscription is arranged in two or three registers separated by a ruled horizontal line, with letters extending to the coin's irregular periphery. The style is characteristic of Safavid calligraphic coinage under Shah Tahmasp I, with no figural elements or border ornament.
