Obverse description Central field entirely occupied by the Shi'a Kalima rendered in bold, deeply struck Nasta'liq-style Arabic script. The profession of faith reads: 'There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God, Ali is the Friend of God,' affirming Twelver Shi'a doctrine as the ideological hallmark of the Safavid state. The inscription is arranged in multiple registers filling the flan, with no border or marginal legend visible on this quarter-mithqal denomination. The hammered fabric gives the lettering a characteristically irregular, slightly raised relief typical of Safavid gold coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.
