Obverse description Central field bears the Portuguese royal arms — a crowned shield displaying the five quinas arranged in a cross, encircled by the castles of the bordure — surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. Flanking the shield is a crowned armillary sphere, the emblem of the Portuguese overseas empire. The peripheral legend in Latin reads MARIA·I·E·PETRUS·III·D·G·REGENTES··P·E·D·GUINEÆ·, identifying the joint regents Maria I and Pedro III by divine grace as rulers of Portugal and Guinea. The coin is framed by a finely milled border of raised beads.
