Muhammad Imaduddin II ruled the Maldives twice — deposed in 1686, then restored in 1704 after his successor's reign collapsed. The quarter larin was the workhorse denomination of Maldivian trade, particularly in exchanges with Arab and Indian merchants passing through Malé on Indian Ocean routes. Billon coinage of this period reflects the chronic shortage of pure silver in the archipelago, where metal had to be imported and was carefully rationed into alloy.
