Nassau's joint coinage under Frederick William of Nassau-Weilburg and Frederick August of Nassau-Usingen was already an anomaly by 1808 — Frederick August had died in April of that year, leaving Frederick William as sole ruler. Coins struck during this transitional window carry the authority of a man already dead, the duchy's administrative apparatus simply continuing under the prior mandate until new dies could be prepared.
The Confederation of the Rhine reorganization of German territories had only recently consolidated the Nassau lines, and this fractional copper issue reflects the chaotic interregnum of that merger.
