Charles Theodore inherited the Palatinate Electorate in 1742 and then unexpectedly acquired Bavaria in 1777 following the extinction of the Bavarian Wittelsbach line — a dynastic windfall that immediately entangled him in the War of the Bavarian Succession against Prussia. The quarter kreuzer copper issues spanning this period were produced across a politically turbulent reign, with the elector ultimately relocating his court to Munich and showing conspicuous disinterest in his Palatine territories. Small copper fractions like this one circulated hardest among the rural poor and often survived only in heavily worn state.
