Bernhard Erich Freund inherited the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen in 1803 at age two, placing his mother Luise Eleonore of Hohenlohe-Langenburg in regency control through 1821. These copper fractions were struck during the Confederation of the Rhine period and its immediate aftermath — years when the smaller German states were caught between Napoleonic reorganization and the eventual reordering under the Congress of Vienna. Saxe-Meiningen survived both intact, one of the few Ernestine duchies to emerge without significant territorial disruption.
