Frederick Charles Joseph von Erthal served as Archbishop-Elector of Mainz from 1774 until French Revolutionary forces effectively ended the Electorate's secular authority. By 1795, that authority was already collapsing — French troops had occupied Mainz in 1792, were expelled in 1793 after a siege, and the political situation remained precarious. Small copper issues like this one continued to be struck despite the instability, though the Electorate itself would be formally dissolved within a few years. Erthal died in 1802, the last Archbishop-Elector to exercise meaningful temporal power over the territory.
