Willem I established the unified Dutch coinage system after the Napoleonic reorganization left the Netherlands with a chaotic mix of French imperial issues, Batavian Republic coins, and older provincial currency circulating simultaneously. The 1/4 Gulden was central to that rationalization. The two KM varieties reflect a documented change in the alloy fineness partway through the run — not an error, but a deliberate Mint adjustment.
Willem abdicated in 1840 rather than accept his government's terms for Belgian independence, ending a reign that had defined this entire coinage series.
