West Friesland was one of the more assertive provincial mints within the Dutch Republic, frequently producing pattern pieces that tested alternative weight standards against those mandated by the States-General. This 1759 quarter gulden pattern — struck at 1.5 ducat weight rather than the conventional gulden fraction standard — almost certainly reflects an internal debate about rationalizing gold coinage denominations during a period when ducat-weight multiples were proving more practical for trade with the Baltic and Levant markets.
The Delmonte attribution confirms its pattern status. Very few examples are known to have been struck for circulation purposes.
