Lucerne's fractional silver coinage of the 1790s was struck against a backdrop of mounting political instability in the Swiss Confederacy — the same years that saw French Revolutionary pressure building toward the 1798 Helvetic Republic, which would abolish cantonal monetary rights entirely. These pieces were among the last independent emissions from Lucerne before that authority was extinguished.
