Reverse description A bold cruciform monogram composed of interlaced letters occupies the central field, formed in the manner of a cross pattée with the denomination numeral '1/4' inscribed at the center intersection. The design is enclosed within an implied square frame created by the arms of the cross. The peripheral legend DOMINUS+SPES+POPULI+SUI, interspersed with cross stops, encircles the composition, with the date 1793 incorporated into the legend at the top of the coin.

Lucerne's fractional silver coinage of the 1790s was struck against a backdrop of mounting political instability in the Swiss Confederacy — the same years that saw French Revolutionary pressure building toward the 1798 Helvetic Republic, which would abolish cantonal monetary rights entirely. These pieces were among the last independent emissions from Lucerne before that authority was extinguished.
