Reverse description The reverse displays a cross fleurdelisée — a cross whose four arms terminate in stylized fleur-de-lis motifs — centrally placed within the field, a heraldic device reflecting the dynastic connections and pretensions of the Gonzaga rulers of Montferrat. The surrounding circular legend reads +IN. DEO. SPES. MEA. followed by the date 1581, the pious motto translating as 'In God is my hope.' The design is executed in the spare, emblematic style common to minor billon denominations of late sixteenth-century northern Italian states. The flan edges are irregular due to the hammered technique of manufacture.
