| Beschrijving keerzijde | A stylized tree trunk with two curling ivy branches arranged symmetrically, all contained within a trilobe or trefoil inner border. The device is a heraldic emblem associated with the Paleologo dynasty of Montferrat. The surrounding legend is divided by decorative floral stops, and the flan shows the typical irregularity of hand-struck medieval billon coinage. |

Giovanni Giacomo Paleologo ruled Montferrat as a vassal of the Duchy of Milan under Filippo Maria Visconti, a relationship that constrained his political independence considerably. The quarter grosso was the workhorse denomination of northern Italian billon coinage in this period — practical rather than prestigious, circulating through the markets and toll stations of the Po Valley rather than entering treasury hoards.
The CNI II attribution places this firmly within a well-documented but relatively thin series for the marquisate.
