Louis I, Dauphin of France from 1401 until his death in 1415, issued this coin under the quasi-sovereign monetary rights held by the Dauphiné — a privilege fiercely maintained by successive dauphins precisely because the region had been acquired by the French crown in 1349 on the explicit condition that its heir would bear the Dauphin title and govern it semi-independently. The Dauphiné's right to strike its own coinage was part of that constitutional arrangement.
Louis died at Compiègne in December 1415, just weeks after Agincourt, never having become king.
