| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a fleur-de-lis, the principal charge of the French royal arms, rendered in Gothic style. The device is surrounded by a circular Latin legend reading KAROLVS FRANCORVM R, identifying Charles as king of the Franks. The coin is struck on an irregular planchet typical of hammered billon coinage of the late fifteenth century, with the legend partially visible around the periphery. The style reflects the Gothic artistic conventions of the Provencal mint at Marseille under Charles VIII. |
