Gilbert of Bronckhorst-Batenburg acquired the lordship of Anholt in 1407, and like many minor Rhenish and Lower Rhine lords of the period, he exercised the minting rights aggressively — small silver fractions like this quarter groot were the working currency of local trade, deliberately sized to compete with the groot coinage circulating out of Gelderland and the bishopric of Utrecht. The proliferation of such petty lordship issues was precisely why the larger territorial powers repeatedly attempted, and largely failed, to suppress autonomous mint rights throughout the fifteenth century.
